How to Start a California Nonprofit: 2025 Edition is Emily Hibard’s fourth nonprofit guidebook. She published the 200-page Starting Your Nonprofit: a Workbook to Guide You Through a Million Exciting Tasks in 2015, after starting her own California nonprofit and struggling to find clear and concise resources to guide her through the incorporation process.

After receiving feedback from founders in her home state of California, stating the guidebook was helpful but “not specific enough” for Californians, Hibard went back to the drawing board.

Two years later, in 2017, she published her first state-specific guidebook, Starting Your Nonprofit: California. The straightforward guidebook was a success. The book was used to help create countless California nonprofit organizations.

Following the success of the state-specific California guidebook, Hibard published Starting Your Nonprofit: Oregon in 2020.
